Sark’s constables have reported “a rise in the number of calls to domestic/family welfare issues” over the past year. From October 5, 2023, to October 4, 2024, their involvement was required for 12 domestic violence incidents and 16 welfare checks. This data originates from the latest constables’ report, which details incidents necessitating investigation, mediation, or assistance. The constables stated they are “actively seeking ways to be able to assist more in these types of issues,” adding that the forthcoming domestic abuse law next year would simplify this process. The report also highlights an increased demand for assistance from Guernsey police in Sark, a situation the constables deemed “unsustainable.” On the car-free island, road traffic complaints accounted for the most significant constable involvement, with 40 incidents. During this period, licenses were issued for 150 tractors, 13 carriages, and 717 bicycles. There were 19 air traffic incidents related to low-flying aircraft. This occurs in the same year Sark has been exploring the possibility of charging for the use of the island’s airspace. Throughout the year, constables have needed to intervene in drink-related incidents on nine occasions. They reported undertaking “unscheduled patrols in the day” and have observed a decrease in the need for intervention.
