Sarah Taylor holds the distinction of having more wicketkeeping dismissals in women’s One Day Internationals than any player except South Africa’s Trisha Chetty. Former England women’s wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor has been appointed to the coaching staff of the England Lions for their upcoming tour of South Africa. Taylor, aged 35, is widely considered among the most accomplished wicketkeepers in cricket history, having earned 226 caps for England across all formats during her 13-year international career. Her coaching experience includes roles in men’s cricket with Sussex and Manchester Originals, and she is believed to be the inaugural woman to be part of an international men’s cricket setup. Ed Barney, England’s performance director, commented to BBC Sport, stating: “She’s got a huge amount of experience, she has a really nice coaching style and she’s worked with some of the best male keepers in the international game.” Barney further added: “We’re always looking to pull the best staff together and that means a certain element of diversity. That doesn’t mean diversity of gender, but diversity of thought, coaching styles and points of difference.” The support staff for the tour, which marks former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff’s debut as Lions head coach, also comprises former England spinner Graeme Swann, alongside ex-South Africa internationals Dale Steyn and Neil McKenzie. The team departed on Wednesday for a training camp designed to partly concentrate on white-ball skills, culminating in a four-day match against South Africa A. Concurrently, Taylor will also collaborate with an under-19 Young Lions squad in South Africa. This group features Rocky, son of Flintoff, and Archie Vaughan, son of former England captain Michael. In 2013, Taylor engaged in discussions regarding playing for the Sussex men’s second XI, although she ultimately did not participate in any matches. She achieved a historic milestone in 2015 by becoming the first woman to compete in Australian first-grade cricket, representing Northern Districts in Adelaide. After initially retiring from her playing career in 2019, she returned to play a single season in The Hundred for Welsh Fire in 2021.
