Santa Claus utilized an offshore lifeboat instead of his traditional sleigh for the activation of Newlyn’s Christmas lights. Penzance Council stated that Storm Darragh rendered conditions “too windy for Father Christmas to use his reindeer-driven sleigh,” leading to his arrival aboard the RNLI’s Severn class lifeboat, the Ivan Ellen. The celebratory event commenced with pupils from Newlyn School performing Christmas songs, followed by a firework display and the illumination of the lights. Penzance mayor Stephen Reynolds remarked that no Christmas lights switch-on events were “quite like Newlyn’s,” further stating, “Well done everyone in Newlyn for making it such a great occasion.” The gathering proceeded despite adverse weather conditions, with the mayor noting that Storm Darragh “brought a little bit to the party, but thankfully, not too much!” Volunteers from Newlyn Harbour Lights coordinate the annual light display and switch-on. The fireworks received £6,000 in grant funding from Penzance Council, which expressed its aim to help “deliver a fireworks display to rival previous years.”
