A technology entrepreneur has been found guilty by a San Francisco jury of second-degree murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of Bob Lee, the creator of the mobile payment application Cash App. Nima Momeni, aged 40, faces a potential prison sentence ranging from 15 years to life for this homicide. Mr. Lee, 43, was fatally attacked during the early hours of April 4, 2023. Authorities discovered him unconscious in the Rincon Hill neighborhood, having sustained two stab wounds to his chest. He subsequently passed away at a hospital. Momeni was acquitted of the more severe charge of first-degree murder, which requires proof of premeditation. The jury deliberated for a period of seven days prior to declaring their decision. After the guilty verdict, Oliver Lee, Mr. Lee’s brother, stated that his family was “happy with the result.” He added, “We’re happy that Nima Momeni won’t be on the streets, no longer has the opportunity to harm anyone else in this world.” The trial, which lasted six weeks, included significant testimony and revelations about Mr. Lee’s last night, which involved drug use. Prosecutors alleged that Momeni used a kitchen paring knife to stab Mr. Lee because he was angered by Mr. Lee’s introduction of Momeni’s sister, Khazar Momeni, to an individual who provided her with GHB, a substance commonly referred to as a date rape drug. Both the prosecution and Nima Momeni’s defense team acknowledged that Momeni, his sister, and Mr. Lee had been socializing on the evening of the murder. However, the defense contended that Momeni acted in self-defense. According to CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, Momeni claimed that Mr. Lee had attacked him with a knife following what Momeni characterized as a “bad joke” directed at Mr. Lee’s family. Prosecutors challenged this narrative, questioning why Momeni failed to report the event to law enforcement or inform anyone about Mr. Lee’s alleged assault. Autopsy findings revealed that Mr. Lee had consumed alcohol, ketamine, and cocaine when he died. Defense lawyers asserted that Mr. Lee’s history of drug use contributed to aggressive behavior. “We are victims of drug abuse,” Mahnaz Tayarani, Momeni’s mother, stated to reporters outside the courthouse on Tuesday. She added, “I know my son… This is not a fair trial.” Ms. Tayarani indicated that her son intends to appeal the conviction. This event had heightened concerns regarding crime and public safety within the Bay Area, prompting tech billionaire and Donald Trump supporter Elon Musk to comment at the time that “violent crime in SF is horrific.” On Tuesday, while commending the conviction, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins directly criticized Mr. Musk, asserting that he had attempted to discredit the city and portray the situation as “seem like lawlessness in San Francisco.” She remarked, “We knew it was something different.” The date for sentencing is scheduled to be determined at a hearing on January 10.
