A historic lido located in East Sussex is scheduled for a temporary closure to facilitate repair work addressing an underground leak. This closure comes several months following an £11 million renovation of the facility. Saltdean Lido, situated in Brighton, anticipates a closure period of three to four weeks, commencing on Thursday. The owners stated that the purpose of the work is to correct the leak and enhance the quality of the piping system surrounding the pool. An £11 million restoration initiative, aimed at returning the UK’s sole Grade II* listed coastal lido to its original state, concluded in July of this year. According to the owners, Saltdean Lido has encountered multiple underground leaks over the past few years. A spokesman commented, “Despite our best efforts to keep the pool open during this period, we have been advised that there are structural risks in doing this and the water level should be reduced while excavation takes place.” The spokesman added, “This means, very sadly, that it is necessary to close the pool until these essential works are completed.” He further stated, “There is no good time to do this, but on balance, winter is better than summer.” The final pool session is scheduled for Wednesday, and the repair work is anticipated to last for a maximum of four weeks. The restoration of the art-deco hemisphere building’s café, library, ballroom, exercise study, and workplace was finalized in July. This project incurred an £11 million cost, funded through community donations and National Lottery contributions.
