Sale Sharks have appointed Byron McGuigan as their new defence coach. This appointment follows Jamie Langley’s departure to the rugby league side Leeds Rhinos. McGuigan, who grew up in South Africa, had joined Glasgow Warriors in 2012. McGuigan has been a member of Alex Sanderson’s coaching staff for the past season, having retired as a player in 2023. The 35-year-old spent seven years playing for Sale as a wing or centre, appearing in over 100 games. He also earned 10 caps for Scotland, scoring three tries. He recently oversaw the Sharks in their Premiership Rugby Cup matches, winning both. McGuigan previously coached amateur clubs in the north west while still a player at Sale, stating that he has found a true calling in coaching. He is now set to assume his new defence role before the Premiership season resumes with a match against Leicester Tigers on 1 December. “My passion is defence,” McGuigan told the club’s website, external. He added, “There’s a few things that we have brought in over the last couple of weeks and we look forward to challenging these systems going into the next block of games.” McGuigan further commented, “The challenge for me is to make our defence effective and bring back our Sharks DNA, physicality, hard work and togetherness, it’s massive for us, that’s non-negotiable.” Post navigation Robinson Hails ‘Common Sense’ After Fraser’s Red Card Rescinded Burnley Manager Scott Parker Addresses December’s Hectic Schedule
