Safety work has commenced on a motorway slip road after several serious crashes. Road markings are being introduced on the A684 at Junction 37 of the M6, near Kendal, with the aim to “discourage overtaking on the motorway bridge, reduce speeds and increase visibility at night”. Westmorland and Furness Council, Cumbria Police, and National Highways are collaborating to reduce the likelihood of further accidents, following a crash in September that resulted in the deaths of two women. Closures are scheduled to start at 20:00 GMT, continuing overnight until 05:00, and will also occur on Tuesday and Thursday. Temporary stop signs were placed on the slip roads at the junction in September while National Highways conducted a safety review. The new road markings feature double white centre lines, road studs, and “SLOW” markings across a 500m (0.3 miles) stretch of road. Westmorland and Furness Council announced that additional safety improvements are planned. Peter Thornton, cabinet member for highways, commented that the section of road has experienced a “number of serious collisions” and confirmed that the local authority and National Highways are working together to “urgently address” the issue.
