Volunteers assisting in the search for a vulnerable elderly man who is missing in Kenilworth have been urged to prioritize their safety due to prevailing weather warnings. This caution from Warwickshire Police coincides with the approach of Storm Darragh to the UK on Friday, bringing forecasts of extreme weather conditions. A rare red weather alert has been issued for Wales and Bristol, while a yellow wind warning is active for the Midlands region on Saturday. John Taylor, aged 86, was last observed near Abbey Fields, adjacent to Finham Brooke, just prior to 09:30 GMT on Tuesday. Residents of the town have participated in nighttime searches, with some deploying drones, despite contending with challenging weather conditions during the effort. Law enforcement agencies have also deployed drones, alongside canine units and a helicopter, and a specialized team has conducted searches in water bodies. A spokesperson for the force stated on Friday: “The search is continuing today and there remains a large police presence in the area.” The spokesperson added that police maintain consistent communication with Mr Taylor’s family, ensuring they receive necessary support. Nevertheless, he further stated: “We’re keen to highlight that there is an extreme weather warning in place over the weekend and John’s family are urging people not to put themselves in danger to help with the search.” He concluded by saying: “We’re especially discouraging people from going searching in the dark.” Authorities confirmed that all farm outbuildings within the vicinity have been thoroughly searched and requested that individuals refrain from entering these structures, particularly after nightfall, as this causes distress to property owners. Police indicated their intention to provide ongoing updates to the community throughout the weekend. Reports of any sightings of Mr Taylor should be made by calling 999, and any other potentially useful information can be shared by dialing 101.
