Walsall manager Mat Sadler, now in his second season at the helm, attributed his squad’s high standards and strong character to their ability to secure a dramatic point against Bromley in a game he characterized as “minging.” The Saddlers found themselves 2-1 down deep into stoppage time before defender David Okagbue netted a last-gasp equalizer. This result extended the League Two promotion contenders’ unbeaten streak to seven matches and maintained Sadler’s team in second position, three points behind leaders Port Vale, whom they are scheduled to face in their upcoming away fixture on 7 December. Speaking to BBC Radio WM, Sadler commented, “At half-time, because they were trying to kill the game their tempo was low, I felt we tried to force it and maybe our tempo wasn’t where we want it to be.” He added, “So to come through it with a point in the manner we did at the end, I can’t fail but be pleased with the heart and desire to keep going.” This stalemate marked only the third occasion this season that Walsall have not secured a home victory in League Two. Following second-half goals by Michael Cheek and Danny Imray, which nullified Liam Gordon’s initial strike for Walsall, a second defeat at the Banks’ Stadium appeared imminent until Okagbue’s intervention salvaged a point. Despite the potential for a worse outcome, Sadler noted a distinct lack of celebration in the dressing room after the final whistle. He elaborated, “When I went in, it was deathly silent – and maybe you wouldn’t expect that because we’ve just had a last-minute equaliser.” Sadler attributed this to the team’s high expectations, stating, “That’s because the group have set their standards.” He further described the match, saying, “Let’s be fair, that was minging – minging to watch and it wasn’t what we’ve been accustomed to watching. The tempo was very slow with balls coming in from everywhere, with big lads with long throws. It slows everything down but you have to stand up to that.” Concluding his remarks, Sadler stated, “It was a horrible Tuesday night game so to come through it with a point in the manner we did, I can’t help but be pleased with the heart and desire the lads showed. Mentality-wise, we have some courage about us to not feel sorry about ourselves, to keep believing. The group deserve their little bits of luck because they give everything every day.”
