Russia has acknowledged, in a rare admission, that a significant air defense system and an air base located in the Kursk region were targeted by Ukraine using US-supplied Atacms missiles. The Russian defense ministry’s statement, which included a threat of retaliation, was issued the day after Ukraine reported hitting targets in the same region. Concurrently, Ukraine’s air force announced that Russia launched an unprecedented 188 drones in a single assault on Monday night, resulting in damage to critical infrastructure. Tensions have escalated since the US reportedly authorized Ukraine last week to employ Atacms missiles against targets within Russia, a decision made in response to Russia’s deployment of North Korean troops. The week concluded with Russia’s deployment of the potent new intermediate-range Oreshnik ballistic missile against the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. The initial reported Atacms strikes on Russian territory occurred on Tuesday, when Russia stated that falling debris caused a fire at a military installation. However, the strike on Monday against an S-400 air-defense missile battalion in Lotarevka, northwest of Kursk, on Saturday, is perceived as more severe.
