A senior councillor has emphasized the necessity for a rural community to utilize its recently reinstated bus service to ensure its continued operation. This development includes the introduction of three new routes, notably one that re-establishes Tockholes’ connection to the bus network following an extended period of absence. These additions are part of a £5.5 million central government grant-funded transport initiative in Lancashire. Quesir Mahmood, the deputy leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, commented on the initiative, stating, “It’s something we’ve been discussing for years and so to see routes being reinstated that had to be lost due to funding cuts is a huge success.” He further stressed the importance of community engagement, adding, “It’s important that residents now utilise these services, otherwise the risk is that they won’t be seen as sustainable.” Councillor Dave Smith, representing Darwen West, noted that “many residents and Tockholes Parish Council” had voiced complaints regarding the discontinuation of the service eight years prior and had actively campaigned for its reinstatement. He further explained that Travel Assist, a not-for-profit enterprise, is responsible for providing the new service. This enterprise receives its funding from a government grant that was allocated to the council. Smith expressed his hope, stating, “We really hope the service can be supported by people living in Tockholes and Belmont.” For further engagement, listeners can access BBC Radio Lancashire on Sounds and follow BBC Lancashire on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
