The general manager of a Royal Mail parcel “super hub” stated that the facility is in “a really strong position” as the Christmas period approaches. This facility, which commenced operations last year at Daventry International Railfreight Terminal (DIRFT) in Northamptonshire, possesses the capacity to process as many as 90,000 parcels hourly. Spanning 53 acres (214,483 sq m), the site provides employment for approximately 2,350 individuals, encompassing both seasonal and agency personnel, and stands as the company’s most extensive automated parcel hub. Alex Grieves reported that the center has been handling “over one million parcels a day” during the period preceding Christmas Day. He stated: “The site is open 364 days a year, 24/7. The only day we are is closed is Christmas Day.” Mr. Grieves further mentioned that Royal Mail’s operations are maintained “around the clock,” with “at least 300 to 400 people on site every hour of every single day.” He indicated that approximately 70% of the parcels processed by the hub originate from manufacturers and observed that the Christmas rush had “exploded” following Black Friday last month. The delivery service has issued guidance to customers, recommending that parcels intended for delivery before Christmas be dispatched promptly, and has also released its final posting dates. This Monday, the government granted approval for the sale of Royal Mail’s parent company to a Czech billionaire, in a takeover transaction valued at approximately £3.6 billion. However, Mr. Grieves affirmed that operations at the facility remain unchanged despite this recent development. He commented: “It’s too early to understand what it [the takeover] means from a local perspective.” He continued: “All we know at the moment is that we are very, very busy for Christmas. “We’re doing a million parcels a day, we don’t envisage anything to change as we move into hearing a bit more about the takeover in the new year.” Jenny Hall, Royal Mail’s corporate affairs director, stated that the takeover has had “no impact” on its “flagship” automated parcel site. She remarked: “It’s [the hub in Daventry] is a really, really important part of our investment of building a Royal Mail for the future and making sure we can deliver the nation’s parcels much quicker and more efficiently.” Post navigation Luton Town Centre’s Final Post Office to Close German manufacturers caution against a significant economic downturn
