Rotherham Council has announced that grants of up to £250 will be made available to families and vulnerable individuals facing challenges due to the cost of living. This initiative will be financed by the £2.5 million Household Support grant that the government allocated to the council. Furthermore, the allocated funds will be utilized to provide food vouchers for over 13,700 children who qualify for free school meals during holiday periods. An additional £1.1 million is designated to assist households experiencing difficulties with energy expenses; a comparable program earlier this year supported 4,622 families. Approximately 15,000 local households will also receive assistance with their council tax, facilitated by a £150,000 enhancement to the existing council tax support scheme. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the council plans to allocate £45,000 for the support of care leavers and £60,000 to voluntary and community organizations aiding vulnerable families during the Christmas and New Year period. An additional £50,000 is earmarked for the provision of essential household goods, including cleaning and hygiene products, distributed via services such as food banks and social supermarkets. The council has also reserved funds to manage potential fluctuations in demand, with any remaining unutilized funds to be reallocated to support addressing the energy crisis. Rotherham Council is anticipated to approve this funding and ensure its complete utilization by March 2025.
