Former Scotland captain Rory Lawson has stated that a degree of perspective is necessary for individuals who contend that the national rugby team has reached a plateau under head coach Gregor Townsend. This call for perspective follows the Springboks’ ruthless execution being highlighted as a key differentiator in the recent match. Scotland demonstrated a strong effort but ultimately lost 32-15 to the world champions, South Africa, at Murrayfield on Sunday. While Gregor Townsend’s coaching period has seen significant achievements, such as consistent Calcutta Cup victories against England and notable wins over France, securing victories against the world’s top three teams—the Springboks, Ireland, and New Zealand—has remained challenging. Under Townsend’s guidance, Scotland achieved a record-high fifth position in the world rankings, though they are currently ranked sixth. However, across his seven Six Nations campaigns as head coach, the team has not managed to finish higher than third in the standings. “I think the reality is that measuring yourself against these top teams in the world, we all want to be operating at that in that position, but sometimes even when you’ve put in a performance, you’ve just got to step away and say we weren’t good enough on that day,” Lawson stated during an appearance on the BBC’s Scotland Rugby Podcast. He added, “We have been very, very competitive in the Six Nations of late. Gregor’s win record is as good as they’ve come for a Scottish coach.” Lawson further commented, “His job is to create an environment whereby the best rugby players in Scotland are at their best, individually and as a team on these matchdays, and he’s not far away from doing that.” Reflecting on the recent game, he noted, “I spoke to a few of the guys after the South Africa game and said to what extent can you make that the level that every team experiences when it comes to physicality, intensity for Scotland?” He concluded by saying, “That has got to be the benchmark now for Scotland.” Post navigation Potential Candidates to Succeed Gleeson as Republic of Ireland Manager Lizelle Lee Achieves Second Consecutive Century in Hurricanes Victory
