A council has announced that a road, rendered impassable by a landslip, will continue to be inaccessible for an additional week. Cobb Road in Lyme Regis was preventatively shut down on Monday, November 25, following the collapse of an embankment adjacent to the steep thoroughfare that descends to the seafront. Dorset Council has since issued an official emergency road closure notification, indicating that the closure is expected to persist until Friday. Interim access arrangements have been established for residences and commercial establishments situated at the base of the incline. Dorset Council stated its ongoing collaboration with the property owner and their appointed contractors. The council further commented: “We have spoken to local residents and businesses regarding alternative access while Cobb Road is closed.” It also advised: “If visitors in cars cannot delay their journey until Cobb Road is reopened, they are advised to park – safely and legally – close to where they wish to go before proceeding on available footpaths, such as Marine Parade.” The geological characteristics of Lyme Regis and its environs render the area susceptible to erosion. Substantial funds, totaling millions, have been invested in reinforcing the town, encompassing a £20m project finalized in 2015 to construct a new seawall and stabilize cliffs on the eastern flank. Cobb Road serves as the sole public thoroughfare providing access to The Cobb section of the town’s beach, an area inhabited by numerous residents and housing various businesses.
