South Street in Hatherleigh, Devon, has been shut down following the collapse of a 12ft (3.65m) high private retaining wall, as confirmed by Devon County Council. The council stated that the road was blocked after the incident occurred on Tuesday, necessitating its closure for the “safety of the public”. Hatherleigh Fire Station indicated that it was “unaware” of the duration of the road closure. The fire service communicated via Facebook that the affected route was their “usual route to get there” for emergencies in the Monkokehampton / Iddesleigh direction. Consequently, they announced plans to “instead try to access via Market Street and Park Road” and requested residents to “park considerately to allow us access with the fire engine during this time.” Devon County Council further reported that “Diversions are in place” and that they were “not aware of any major traffic issues on surrounding roads” nor was the closure “impacting the A386 or A3072.” Authorities confirmed that “No-one was injured” in the collapse.
