A retail expert has called upon Guernsey business leaders to embrace the role of green pioneers. Mary Portas, known for presenting “Mary Queen of Shops” on BBC Two, stated that the bailiwick requires a “clear vision” to “drive real transformation.” She remarked, “You could be one of the first islands to become a green, thriving, profitable and beautiful community.” Her comments were made to over 450 business professionals at the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce’s annual Gala Dinner on 14 November. Ms Portas highlighted the importance of showcasing practical examples of the green economy to businesses, to prevent them from focusing solely on “costs” and “burdens.” She added, “I think coming together, collaboration is going to be utterly key to this – it really is.” Alice Gill, the executive director of the chamber, described Ms Portas as “inspirational” and challenged businesses to consider what they wanted “Guernsey to be known for.” Ms Gill commented, “And I don’t think we can answer that question.” She further stated, “We need to come together, create a shared vision, and use our networks to build partnerships that will drive real change – to deliver on making Guernsey a great place to live and work.” Ms Portas commenced her career by working weekends at John Lewis before advancing to become the commercial director of Harvey Nichols. Subsequently, she established an agency that provided advisory services to brands such as Clarks, Louis Vuitton, and Sainsbury’s. Beyond her television program, where she assisted independent retailers in revitalizing their establishments, Ms Portas also offered counsel to David Cameron’s government on matters related to high street retail.
