Approval has been granted for 175 new residences in a coastal community, notwithstanding reservations regarding their failure to meet net-zero standards. Summerfield Developments previously constructed 75 properties within Watchet’s Liddymore Park estate. The planning committee of Somerset Council subsequently endorsed proposals for an additional 175 dwellings at the same estate on Tuesday. Councillor Habib Farbahi commented, stating: “To see this site developing 31% affordable homes is to be welcomed.” Conversely, Councillor Caroline Ellis expressed disapproval of the designs, contending that the council ought to exert more significant pressure on developers to construct net-zero homes. As reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Ms Ellis conveyed to the assembly: “These are not net zero homes – these are being built assuming that there’s a Planet B in mind, and we need to be stronger on this.” Councillor Steven Pugsley responded by saying: “These are things that needed to have been discussed when the outline plans came forward. I’m afraid that ship has sailed.” Darren Beer, an associate director at Focus on Design, who represented the developer based in Taunton, informed the committee that the firm had “chosen to ensure that there is a complete circular set of connections for pedestrians and cyclists linking to green spaces within the site”. The committee’s vote to endorse the proposals was unanimous, indicating that the construction of subsequent phases can commence in the upcoming year. Watchet, situated between Minehead and the River Parrett’s estuary, has attracted considerable attention from housing developers over the past few years. A total of four locations, including the Liddymore Park estate, possess the potential to collectively provide almost 900 new residences, thereby expanding the town’s existing population by approximately 45%.
