The RSPCA has announced that kittens, previously rescued from a “filthy” rabbit hutch, are now seeking new homes. In October, RSPCA officers responded to a call concerning kittens in the garden of a Bradford property, following reports from members of the public. Within the hutch, four kittens were found lacking food and water. The enclosure itself was soiled with urine and faeces, and was secured by an old paint point. After unsuccessful attempts to contact the owner, the RSPCA took custody of the kittens, noting that they have since “blossomed and thrived.” The kittens, currently 14 weeks old, have been given the names Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Basil, and Pepper. While Cinnamon is undergoing tests for a heart murmur, her three siblings are the ones currently available for adoption. Ruth Vaughan, representing the RSPCA Hollingworth Lake Animal Centre, which is managed by the Rochdale branch, stated: “The kittens are doing really well and are very playful and sweet.” She added: “We’d love to find them homes in pairs or they could go individually if they’ll get socialisation in the home with an existing cat.” Vaughan expressed the RSPCA’s hope that despite their challenging beginning, the kittens would receive a “fresh start just in time for Christmas.” According to RSPCA data, England and Wales are experiencing a “rehoming crisis,” with 42% more animals entering shelters in 2023 than were successfully adopted. In response, the organization has initiated a “Join the Christmas Rescue” campaign aimed at increasing adoption rates.
