The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has confirmed its awareness of a data breach impacting correctional facilities across England and Wales. The Times reported that confidential schematics of these prisons were disseminated on the dark web over the preceding fortnight. A former governor of a prison informed the publication that organized crime groups might potentially leverage this data to facilitate the introduction of illicit substances or weaponry into correctional institutions, or to orchestrate escape attempts. The Ministry of Justice indicated that it had “taken immediate action to ensure prisons remain secure”. The Times also conveyed that prison authorities suspect a potential connection between the leak and organized crime groups intending to employ drones for drug smuggling into prisons, with the blueprints potentially serving to circumvent existing security protocols. These leaked architectural plans reportedly detail the positions of critical security elements, including surveillance cameras and sensors, thereby potentially simplifying the process for criminals to circumvent security systems or exploit weaknesses. The specific correctional facility plans impacted by the breach have not been disclosed. Both the Cabinet Office and the Prison Service are reportedly collaborating to pinpoint the origin of the compromise and evaluate potential beneficiaries of the disclosed information. The National Crime Agency (NCA) informed the BBC that its role is advisory, clarifying that it would be “incorrect” to state it was investigating the incident. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice stated: “We are not going to comment on the specific detail of security matters of this kind, but we are aware of a breach of data to the prison estate and like with all potential breaches have taken immediate action to ensure prisons remain secure.” The initial detection of this leak occurred via an internal alert distributed earlier in the current month, which the publication reviewed.
