A report indicates that over 3,000 vehicles daily are exceeding the speed limit in a North East Lincolnshire village. Road safety enhancements are under consideration for Barnoldby-le-Beck, specifically on Waltham road, which connects the village with Waltham. This development follows a petition signed by over 100 residents, who requested an alteration to the speed limit due to “atrocious” speeding within the 30mph (48km/h) zone. North East Lincolnshire Council is evaluating a speed limit adjustment and the implementation of electronic driver feedback signs, subsequent to an investigation initiated in October. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reported that traffic data collected during 2023/24 revealed “poor” adherence to the speed limit by motorists on both approaches to the village centre. Daily traffic volume through the village is just under 6,500 vehicles, according to Department for Transport figures. The investigation’s report indicated that over half of these vehicles were travelling “above the normal prosecution limit for the police”. Proposed options include decreasing the 60mph (96.5km/h) speed limit in the stretch between Waltham and the Barnoldby village area, deploying electronic driver feedback signs, reassessing safety camera enforcement, and updating road markings and signs. While street lighting was also evaluated, the report concluded it would be “prohibitively expensive” when compared to alternative solutions. Physical interventions aimed at reducing vehicle speeds, such as speed bumps and rumble strips, have been dismissed. The report stated that rumble strips, specifically, would “likely to cause annoyance and a poorer quality of life” for local residents because of the noise generated. Councillor Stewart Swinburn confirmed he expects to receive a further update at a public meeting once the investigations are concluded.
