Residents of the island are receiving a reminder regarding the correct method for disposing of fireworks in advance of Bonfire Night, scheduled for Tuesday. According to Guernsey Waste, fireworks present a significant hazard to personnel involved in waste management and have the potential to ignite fires within collection trucks or at their final disposal locations. The waste management service advised that fireworks must be allowed to cool for a minimum of 30 minutes, submerged in water for at least one hour, and subsequently encased in plastic prior to being placed in general household refuse. It further cautioned: “Do not be tempted to store unused fireworks for another day, as they pose a fire risk.” The GSPCA announced its preparations for an active period at its animal shelter leading up to Bonfire Night. Steve Byrne, the manager, noted that “thankfully” the number of vendors selling fireworks this year is restricted. He explained: “The loud bangs and bright lights can often scare animals and we often see an increase in escaped animals during these periods.” Byrne expressed: “Hopefully this firework period and those watching the fireworks can enjoy them.” He concluded: “At the GSPCA we want to make sure all of our animals in Guernsey will be safe and well.”
