Following the identification of “serious failings” by the Regulator of Social Housing, opposition politicians have voiced criticism against West Northamptonshire Council and a social housing provider. The Regulator of Social Housing reported that West Northamptonshire Council was unable to confirm that all necessary health and safety inspections were being conducted in the affected properties. The Labour, Liberal Democrat, and Independent political groups intend to challenge the governing Conservatives during a full council meeting scheduled for Thursday. Adam Brown, the council leader, commented that efforts to enhance services were “well under way”. The regulator indicated that “significant improvement” was required for the social housing services, which are delivered by Northamptonshire Partnership Homes (NPH). According to the regulator, there was no guarantee that essential health and safety checks—covering fire, electrical systems, water, asbestos, lifts, and smoke and carbon monoxide alarms—were being performed, nor that any identified problems were being rectified with sufficient speed. Earlier in the current month, the Conservative-led council disclosed that it had voluntarily reported itself to the regulator, citing concerns that NPH might not have upheld national quality and safety standards in certain properties. Wendy Randall, who leads the Labour group within the local authority, stated: “Lessons need to be learned, priorities rethought, and safeguards put in place to ensure this doesn’t happen again.” Jonathan Harris, the deputy leader of the Northamptonshire Liberal Democrats, suggested the implementation of a plan to “bring responsibility for council houses currently under NPH’s responsibility, directly back within the responsibility of the council”. Independent group councillor Ian McCord expressed a stronger stance, declaring: “This council has no confidence in the board, chief executive and chairman of NPH and calls for their resignations”. Mr Brown commented: “We will make sure there is a level of accountability in these matters, but for the time being, our focus is meeting the demands of the regulator, making sure the tenants are safe, and carrying out the works required.” He further noted that efforts to rectify the problems were “well under way”.
