The term ‘creativity’ has frequently arisen in discussions regarding Arsenal’s performance this season, or more precisely, its absence. Arsenal, currently positioned fourth and trailing Liverpool by nine points, has indeed exhibited a lack of creative play. The eight-week unavailability of key playmaker Martin Odegaard has contributed to this issue, but the remainder of Arsenal’s offensive unit has also appeared ineffective and inconsistent. As supporters endeavor to pinpoint the underlying problems, attention has shifted to what might have been. This brings Emile Smith Rowe into consideration; having departed Arsenal in the summer, he is now making a significant impact with a high-flying Fulham side, currently in seventh place and just one point behind Arsenal. Smith Rowe has contributed to five goals for Fulham across 11 matches, in addition to securing three Player of the Match awards. If his objective was to demonstrate to Arsenal what they are missing, his efforts are clearly succeeding. However, it is an oversimplification to contend that Arsenal should not have allowed him to leave. No one could have predicted that Arsenal would be without Odegaard for such an extended period, nor that the goal production from the rest of the Gunners’ attack would diminish so dramatically. Had Odegaard not sustained his injury, a debate concerning Smith Rowe would simply not be occurring. During the previous season, Arsenal established numerous goal-scoring records, including becoming the first team in English league history to achieve three consecutive away victories by five goals or more. Smith Rowe’s involvement during this period was largely from the bench. When Arsenal performs at its optimal level, which admittedly has not been the case this season, Smith Rowe is not typically a central figure. Smith Rowe consistently articulated that his primary objective was to secure more playing time. He desired to play, while Arsenal aimed to advance to the next level. Much like the mutual dissolution of a romantic relationship, both parties can find contentment in the understanding that, despite any lingering affection, the moment had simply arrived to wish each other well and move forward.
