Caroline Weir, a midfielder for Real Madrid, stated that Celtic is “putting Scotland on the map” through their participation in this season’s Champions League. The Scottish international was back in her home country as her Spanish club secured a 3-0 victory over Celtic in Hamilton during matchday five of Europe’s premier club tournament. Despite this being the SWPL champions’ fifth consecutive loss, Weir, who did not score during her return visit, commended Elena Sadiku’s team. The 29-year-old expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I watched Celtic through the qualifying process to get into the group stages, and I was buzzing for them.” She continued, “I think it’s so cool to have a Scottish team in the Champions League and I really wanted them in the draw. Then we got them, so it’s great for Celtic as a club, a big Scottish club, but also for the women’s game. “It puts Scotland on the map by playing against some of the biggest names in Europe, so they’ve done so well to qualify and hopefully it’s the start of Scottish teams doing well in the Champions League and getting into the group stages.” Weir humorously noted that she “faced a few dead ends” while trying to guide her team-mates around Glasgow, suggesting she “could have done with a map.” However, even a couple of navigational errors did not diminish her excitement about participating in club football within Scotland. She concluded by reflecting on the significance of the event: “As a young kid growing up, I would have loved to come watch Celtic v Real Madrid, so to be part of it is amazing for me, my family and women’s sport in Scotland.” Post navigation Assessing Arsenal and Liverpool’s Title Challenge Against Manchester City Fan Q&A Ahead of Wolves-Southampton Clash
