An exceptionally rare “one-in-a-billion” spherical egg, which a man acquired spontaneously after consuming a few alcoholic drinks, has been sold at auction for £200. Ed Pownell, residing in Lambourn, Berkshire, paid £150 for the unusual item and subsequently donated it to the Iuventas Foundation. This charitable organization provides mentoring, life coaching, and mental health support to young individuals across Oxfordshire. Initially, the charity considered the donation as if it “was a joke” before deciding to put it up for sale. Roz Rapp, representing the foundation, stated: “We’re delighted and thrilled the egg sold as it means we can continue to do what we are doing.” Ms Rapp clarified that the hen’s egg was just one of several items featured in the charity’s auction, which collectively raised a total of £5,000. This spherical anomaly was originally discovered by a woman who found it within a box from her local supermarket in Ayr, Scotland. Mr Pownell described his purchase as “money well spent”. David Miller, an employee of Thomson Roddick Callan auction house, where the egg had been previously sold, indicated that spherical eggs are believed to be a “one-in-a-billion” occurrence. Ms Rapp further commented: “The money raised will help… 13-25-year-olds struggling with their mental health.” She continued: “It will enable us to reach more youths who are needing support or are on long waiting lists.” For updates, BBC Berkshire can be followed on Facebook, X, or Instagram.
