Rangers manager Philippe Clement considers Aberdeen to be legitimate title contenders as his team gets ready for an upcoming midweek match at Pittodrie. Aberdeen, currently in second place, preserved their six-point lead over the Ibrox club by securing a 1-0 victory against Dundee United. This outcome briefly propelled them to the top of the league standings before Sunday’s scheduled matches. Following his own team’s 2-1 triumph over St Mirren, secured by a winning goal from Vaclav Cerny, the Belgian manager promptly shifted his focus to the Dons. Regarding Jimmy Thelin’s team, Clement stated, “I think they have done exceptionally well.” He added, “If they keep this level all season then they will be in contention.” Clement continued, “But I’m focused on Rangers and raising our level month by month and making things better here with the squad.” He further remarked, “So I’m not busy with that, it’s still how many games to go until the end of the season, 29? So it’s still a long way to go.” The manager also commended Cyriel Dessers for his diligent effort and for providing the assist that resulted in the decisive goal. Dessers, the forward, had exited the field somewhat suddenly due to an eye injury sustained midweek during their 4-0 Europa League victory against FCSB. However, Clement indicated that this action demonstrated Dessers’ “big heart”. Clement stated: “I told you guys what happened on Thursday, and it’s Cyril with his big heart, and he showed his big heart also today, the way he came on” He elaborated, “So he loves this club, he wants to give everything to get results, and that he showed not only with the assist, but also when the ball went out, to make a fast throw and keep the tempo going on, higher than it was first half.” He concluded by saying, “So the striker is not only scoring the goals, he’s also giving assists and working hard, and that’s what he’s been doing”.
