A complimentary light festival is scheduled to take place in Ramsgate throughout the Christmas season. Named Ramsgate Lumiere, the event will commence on 24 November and conclude on 31 December. The inaugural event, titled “Let There Be Light,” is planned for St George’s Church on 24 November, coinciding with the illumination of Ramsgate town’s Christmas lights. Teresa Askew, an event organiser, stated: “Some of the attractions that are on at Christmas are expensive for families with the high cost of living, but this is all free.” Over the course of the six weeks, the festival will feature LED lights and projections, a Christmas tree festival, and lantern workshops at St George’s Church, which is set to mark its 200th anniversary in 2027. Jemima Brown, St George’s Church Regeneration Officer, commented: “When you come into the church you will see it full of Christmas Trees which have been decorated by local community groups which look magical, and the smell is amazing”. Owners of boats in Ramsgate Harbour will continue a decade-long tradition by illuminating their vessels, with awards presented for Best Yacht and Best Motor Boat. Organisers indicate that the initiative seeks to invigorate the town centre. Ms Askew further mentioned: “There will be a living advent calendar around the town when a different shop or home each day through December will be lit up or hold an event for people to take part in.” The Ramsgate Lumiere event is scheduled to conclude with a winter lantern parade through the town on 31 December.
