Dedicated receptacles for chewing gum are being introduced at railway stations, with the collected waste destined for recycling into products such as coffee cups and trainer soles. Train operator Northern has deployed these bins at 13 railway stations spanning Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and Cumbria. This initiative aims to discourage littering among customers and promote recycling practices. Furthermore, Gumdrop Ltd, the company responsible for developing a recycling method for chewing gum waste, manufactures these bins using discarded chewing gum. Northern indicated that the chewing gum would also be converted into additional practical items, including stationery. The specific train stations where bins have been placed include Barrow-in-Furness, Bolton, Buxton, Deansgate, Lea Green, Manchester Victoria, Newton-le-Willows, Salford Central, Salford Crescent, Ulverston, Warrington Central, Whitehaven, and Wigan Wallgate. Craig Harrop, Northern’s regional director for the North West, commented on the initiative, stating: “Discarded chewing gum is an expensive and persistent issue for us. Its removal is a time-consuming process for our cleaning teams whose time could be better spent on the overall cleanliness and appearance of our stations. These new Gumdrop bins will provide our customers with a dedicated disposal point for their chewing gum and help ensure a cleaner environment for all rail users.”
