A Buckingham Palace source has indicated that Queen Camilla will not participate in certain parts of the Qatari state visit scheduled for this week, owing to a viral chest infection. According to a Palace source, the infection, which she has experienced in recent weeks, persists, resulting in reduced energy levels. Modifications to the Queen’s schedule were implemented following medical recommendations. The 77-year-old monarch is now scheduled to be absent from the official arrival of the Emir of Qatar on Tuesday morning, and her involvement in other components of the visit will be reduced. King Charles, alongside the Prince and Princess of Wales, is expected to greet the Qatari head of state in the UK during the customary formal reception at London’s Horse Guards Parade. This occasion marks the first state visit for Catherine since her cancer diagnosis, disclosed in March, as she progressively resumes her public engagements. Following the customary formal welcome, the Queen will not join the carriage procession returning to Buckingham Palace. However, she plans to attend a luncheon at the palace upon the royal party’s return and anticipates viewing an exhibition within the Picture Gallery of the royal residence. Furthermore, the Queen is scheduled to be present at the state banquet on Tuesday, though Catherine will not participate in this particular event. The Queen is anticipated to attend the farewell ceremonies for the emir on Wednesday. Sources from the Palace indicate that her initial diagnosis from November remains unaltered, and she requires a period of rest for a complete recovery, a task made more difficult by the continuous nature of engagements during a state visit. The altered schedule for the state visit would have required the Queen to spend significant periods outdoors or standing while interacting with individuals. Given that temperatures in London on Tuesday are forecast to be approximately 7C, it is probable that royal medical staff advised the Queen to forgo the ceremonial welcome to prevent prolonged exposure to the cold. The Queen contracted this illness approximately one month prior, following a journey with the King to Australia and Samoa, which included a stop in India on their return. When announcing the infection in early November, Buckingham Palace stated: “Her Majesty The Queen is currently unwell with a chest infection, for which her doctors have advised a short period of rest.” She withdrew from several planned engagements at the beginning of November, including Remembrance Sunday, due to the chest infection, with doctors recommending a brief period of recuperation at home. The Palace had indicated that she would resume public duties later that month, albeit with certain adjustments to her timetable. She subsequently attended an event at the University of London, where Princess Anne conferred upon her an honorary doctorate of literature. On November 22, the Queen was absent from the Royal Variety Performance alongside the King, after the Palace declared she would not accompany him due to “lingering post-viral” symptoms stemming from the chest infection.
