An invitation has been extended to residents in Gloucestershire to provide their feedback regarding a proposed new connection from the M5 motorway. Gloucestershire County County has presented five alternative plans designed to connect junction nine with the A46 and Tewkesbury, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion during busy periods. These options comprise three potential connections for the western segment, extending from the M5 to the Seven Bends junction, and two for the eastern segment, running from Seven Bends to the Teddington Hands. The implementation of this project is contingent upon securing government funding; however, as it is currently in its preliminary phases, no financial commitment has been made to date. Michael Bottriell, a resident of Northway, conveyed to BBC Radio Gloucestershire: “My thoughts are that it’s needed. There’s no question about the A46 at this moment in time – it’s saturated.” He further stated: “They’re talking about [the work finishing in] 10 years’ time. My opinion is that in 10 year’s time, the situation will have changed, and changed again.” Bottriell added: “I can’t help thinking it’s a little bit like ‘shutting the stable door after the horse had gone’.” He concluded: “Perhaps it’s a little bit too late.” Conversely, Phil McKenzie, another local resident, commented: “I actually think it’s a great idea. The traffic on the A46 at the moment is a car park.” McKenzie continued: “This bypass will probably get rid of about 50% of the traffic. Anything that they do to reduce the volume of traffic has got to be a good thing.” He expressed: “I think most people certainly in Northway will be definitely up for it.” The proposed initiative is intended to redirect substantial traffic volumes from the A46, simultaneously enhancing connectivity, reducing travel durations, and boosting road safety. Furthermore, it is designed to complement a distinct project involving the construction of 10,000 new residences and the development of 120 hectares of employment land in Ashchurch. Subsequent stages of the project are contingent upon the approval of government funding, a decision for which Gloucestershire County Council is currently awaiting.
