Public information sessions are being conducted to inform the community about proposed plans for a sewage treatment facility, aimed at preventing the discharge of waste into the sea. Manx Utilities (MU) is currently developing plans that include several intermediate pumping stations in Laxey and a treatment plant situated at Axnfell Plantation, which is also intended to serve the Lonan area. The initial public information session is scheduled from 11:00 to 19:30 GMT at Laxey Sailing Club, with the subsequent session occurring on Thursday at Baldrine Methodist Church Hall. Martin Royle, Clerk of Garff Commissioners, stated that the local authority “strongly” encouraged public attendance, especially from residents living in close proximity to the proposed sites. He further explained that possessing a “clear understanding of the plans” would allow residents to offer the “most informed and effective feedback” to Manx Utilities, the planning inspector, and the Council of Ministers, the entities responsible for the ultimate decision. Mr. Royle indicated that the local authority was “keen to gauge public opinion,” and despite a prevailing sentiment among board members that “something needs to be done,” they would also take into account the perspectives of residents in the Axnfell area. He added that the commissioners aimed to “hear the views of the community” prior to engaging in “further discussion” and evaluating “whether to commit support” to the proposal. Manx Utilities has announced its intention to submit these plans in 2025. These proposed works, designed to halt the discharge of raw sewage into the sea, come after a planning application at the Cairns was rejected in 2020. That rejection was attributed to concerns from nearby residents regarding odor and the potential negative impact on tourism in the vicinity. An appeal hearing concerning Manx Utilities’ plans for a regional sewage treatment facility in Peel concluded last month. John Wannenburgh, chairman of Manx Utilities, stated that subsequent to the Peel proposals, which are still under review by the planning inspector, the authority is “now progressing to address the final catchments within Garff.”
