A public consultation has commenced regarding prospective adjustments to on-street parking fees throughout Rother. East Sussex County Council (ESCC) stated that its proposed increases to on-street pay and display charges are intended to manage parking demand and promote the adoption of more sustainable transportation methods. The proposals also encompass modifications to parking permit expenses, which would see low-emission vehicles incurring a reduced fee. Councillor Claire Dowling commented: “Charging for parking helps us manage the demand and helps to reduce congestion, which has a positive impact on the local economy as well as air quality.” ESCC indicated that the suggested increments to on-street charges are not uniform, varying by specific location and duration of stay; however, the hourly rate increases across the district fall within a range of 25p to 85p. The council further noted that the expenses for resident, visitor, and business permits are also set to rise as part of these proposals, though concessions will be available for disabled motorists and low-emission vehicles. Revenue generated from parking fees is mandated to cover the expenditures associated with management, enforcement, and administration, thereby preventing any financial strain on ESCC taxpayers. Any funds remaining after these costs are met will be allocated to the supported bus network, Real Time Passenger Information signs, concessionary bus fares, and local transport schemes, according to the council. Ms Dowling additionally stated: “This consultation will help us understand if proposed changes to on-street parking and permit charges could encourage people to use more sustainable forms of transport and more environmentally friendly vehicles.” The period for public input on this consultation concludes on 29 November.
