A proposal for a reduced speed limit on a principal thoroughfare in Lincolnshire is currently awaiting approval from councillors. North Lincolnshire Council officials have put forward a recommendation to establish a 50mph (80km/h) limit on Mortal Ash Hill, part of the A18 route leading into Scunthorpe. The current regulation for this section of road is the national speed limit. The authority stated that approximately 25,000 trips occur daily on this road, and lowering the speed limit is expected to decrease the number of accidents and enhance overall safety. Should the proposal be sanctioned, the revised limit would be enforced along the stretch from the Forest Pines roundabout to the steelworks’ Gate A roundabout. The council is currently engaging with local residents to gather their opinions. Councillor Tim Mitchell, who holds the cabinet position for connectivity, commented: “This decision has come about following discussions with our partners at Humberside Police and Safer Roads Humber.” He further added, “Mortal Ash Hill is one of our main arteries and we need to ensure travelling along it is as safe and smooth as possible.” Mitchell concluded, “This reduction in speed will not only protect motorists, but also reduce emissions in the area.” Feedback regarding the suggested initiative must be submitted to the council’s Traffic Safety Team prior to 2 January 2025.
