A modern running track is a potential component of a local council’s initiative to enhance health and fitness amenities within a town. Mid Suffolk District Council intends to construct a six-lane track, featuring a 100-metre sprint area and an independent 200-metre oval mini athletics track, at Chilton Fields in Stowmarket. The total expenditure for this undertaking, which encompasses floodlighting for an additional rugby pitch, is projected to exceed £861,000. Of this sum, £497,000 may be provided by developers. This proposition forms a segment of the council’s Stowmarket Health, Education and Leisure Facilities (SHELF) scheme, designed to tackle health disparities. Cabinet members are scheduled to decide next Tuesday whether to approve a Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) offer from developers. Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) payments, which are legally mandated from developers of residential properties throughout the district, are reinvested to facilitate the parallel development of amenities alongside housing growth. The comprehensive £2.4m SHELF project also incorporates a synthetic 3G pitch and has already led to the installation of a new outdoor fitness trail. Furthermore, the council has collaborated with Stowmarket Cricket Club to install new cricket nets at its Chilton Fields location and is exploring the construction of a shared sports pavilion. Andrew Mellen, the council leader representing the Green Party, stated: “Since the conception, this has been an ambitious project – but one I am pleased to see we are making great progress with.” He added: “We have always been very clear about our commitment to sports and wellbeing facilities, and this is just one of the ways that we can reaffirm that commitment.” Mellen further commented: “This funding will allow us to push ahead with our plans and deliver some truly great facilities for the people of Stowmarket and surrounding areas.”
