A council has committed to upgrading the “inadequate” toilet facilities of a listed library building, pending approval of new proposals. Bradford Council stated that the existing toilets at Ilkley Library “not provide a necessary service to all users.” Consequently, the council sought authorization to modify the Grade II listed structure. The proposed changes include modifying the library’s toilets to enhance accessibility for disabled individuals, alongside the addition of a small kitchenette area at the building’s rear. The application for Listed Building Consent noted that the current toilet facilities were situated within a “rather limited, restricted area of the building.” As reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the plans indicated that the present toilets were “inadequate and, essentially, do not provide necessary service to all users of the library at the ground floor level.” These plans involve the removal of an internal partition wall to convert an existing single toilet into a unisex disabled facility. The application further specified that this modification would ensure the library is accessible “to all users, regardless of personal condition.”
