Animal owners in Guernsey are advocating for stricter controls on the sale and deployment of fireworks, citing concerns for the well-being of domestic animals and local wildlife. Presently, the sale of fireworks is limited to individuals aged 20 and above, and is permitted only from October 28 until the end of business on November 5. Jean-Paul Kennedy, a horse owner, proposed that fireworks sales be confined solely to November 5, with a three-day period designated for their use in displays. Conversely, Chris Knapp, who serves as the director of sponsorship for the Guernsey Raiders rugby club, highlighted the significance of organized fireworks events for generating funds and fostering community cohesion. Mr. Kennedy stated: “They should only be sold on 5 November. You should have to register to get them and I think there should just be three days where you can let the fireworks off.” He added that this would allow pet owners to be aware of the specific dates, enabling them to “try and prepare the best they can for the welfare of the animals.” Mr. Knapp commented: “It’s something that we as a club all really look forward to. “It’s a big revenue generator for us as a charity to enable our teams to carry on playing rugby throughout the course of the year, and all the benefits that that brings to people of all ages.””
