Councillors have rejected proposals to convert a former pub, previously damaged by fire, into a retail establishment. This decision was made due to concerns regarding road safety and after receiving petitions signed by over 200 individuals. Specifically, Sunderland City Council declined an application for the conversion of the former Traveller’s Rest pub, located in the Shiney Row ward of the city. The proposed development generated three petitions, collectively signed by 210 people, in addition to 21 letters expressing objections. The council stated that the proposed shop would draw “vehicles to and from the site,” and a lack of improved parking facilities could compromise the safety of pedestrians and the highway. Furthermore, residents voiced concerns regarding potential issues such as anti-social behaviour and litter. Councillor Iain Scott commented that reactivating the building was a “sound idea,” but he concurred that the insufficient parking provisions necessitated the refusal of the application, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Planning officers referred to highways data indicating that 20 accidents had occurred along that specific stretch of the A182 over the preceding 23 years. Subsequent to the vote, a representative acting for the applicant contended that the identified issue would persist regardless of the building’s future use. In reply, Councillor Melanie Thornton affirmed that the council desired the building to be “brought back into use” but was obligated to prioritize the “safety” of local residents. The structure had been engulfed by a fire in March 2023, an incident in which no injuries were reported. BBC Sunderland can be followed on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram.
