A proposal has been advanced to transform a bungalow into a school catering to children with special educational needs. Hexagon Care Services aims to convert a detached property in Houghton-le-Spring, Sunderland, into an educational facility designed for up to 16 children with autism and other emotional and mental health requirements. The planning application, submitted to Sunderland City Council, specifies that only minimal alterations would be necessary to adapt the house situated on Black Boy Road. According to the applicants, the initiative would generate 10 jobs, and the students would originate from the local vicinity. A decision on the application is expected by December. The applicant clarified, “The pupils will be children who reside at children’s homes located in close proximity or living at home with parents.” The company also expressed its view that the location would not have a detrimental effect on traffic within the area.
