A proposal has been lodged for the construction of an Aldi supermarket on a former quarry site situated on the periphery of a Derbyshire town. This location, known as Harveydale Quarry on Dale Road in Matlock, currently contains the disused Derbyshire County Council offices within John Hadfield House, as well as a garage. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, these existing structures are slated for demolition to facilitate the development of the new supermarket and its associated parking facility. The submission to Derbyshire Dales District Council indicates the potential creation of 50 employment opportunities. Should the proposal receive approval, the Aldi store itself would occupy a reduced area of 1,864 sq m, a decrease from the current buildings’ combined 2,424 sq m. The plans also detail provisions for 92 car parking spaces, supplemented by six disabled parking spots, seven spaces designated for parents with children, and four electric vehicle charging points. A document submitted by the supermarket chain asserts that the project will utilize “previously developed land that has been underutilised for over four years, which is conveniently located at the edge of Matlock town centre”. The document further stated, “Given the absence of a discount food retailer in the wider Matlock area, it is considered that site represents an ideal opportunity for Aldi to deliver a foodstore for the town.” The district council is expected to render a decision on the application within the coming months.
