Law enforcement officials have initiated a murder inquiry and apprehended an individual following the “sudden death” of a man within a prison. Northamptonshire Police were summoned to HMP Five Wells in Wellingborough on Tuesday morning after a 49-year-old man was discovered deceased. A 20-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of murder and remains under police detention. HMP Five Wells, operated by the security firm G4S, commenced operations in 2022 and accommodates approximately 1,700 male Category C prisoners. A police spokesperson stated: “Officers were called to reports of the sudden death of a 49-year-old man at His Majesty’s Prison Five Wells in Wellingborough at about 09.30 GMT on 10 December.” The spokesperson added that “Detectives have launched an investigation and are working closely with the prison to establish the circumstances which has led to the man’s death.” Yesterday saw the publication of a report concerning the prison’s most recent inspection, conducted in November, which revealed “evidence of progress” in key areas, including a reduction in self-harm incidents.
