Kensington Palace announced that the Princess of Wales has extended an invitation to families impacted by the Southport attacks to attend her yearly Christmas carol service. The fourth “Together At Christmas” service is scheduled for December 6 at Westminster Abbey. This event concludes a year in which Catherine significantly reduced her public engagements due to her cancer diagnosis. Last month, she visited Southport alongside the Prince of Wales, engaging in a private meeting with the grieving families of three children who died in a knife attack in July. This marked her initial official public engagement since completing chemotherapy treatment. Royal sources indicated at the time that her decision to accompany Prince William was to demonstrate her “support, empathy and compassion to the local community”. Bebe King, aged 6, Elsie Dot Stancombe, aged 7, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, aged 9, lost their lives on 29 July, 2024, during the attack at a children’s dance group. The royal couple conversed with the families of the three children and subsequently conveyed the families’ gratitude to emergency responders. Earlier in the current month, the 42-year-old princess participated in Remembrance events in London alongside the King and other senior members of the Royal Family. The Royal Foundation, a charity that backs the initiatives of the prince and princess, is providing support for the carol service. Members of the Royal Family and approximately 1,600 invited guests are expected to attend, including individuals recognized for their efforts in supporting others through their professional roles or volunteer work. The honorees were nominated either by charities linked to the Royal Family or by lord lieutenants, who act as the King’s representatives in various counties nationwide. Musical performances by artists such as Paloma Faith, Olivia Dean, and Gregory Porter will also feature at the event. ITV1 will broadcast the service as part of a special Christmas Eve program. A total of fifteen “Together At Christmas” services are scheduled nationwide, with locations including the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro and Blackpool Tower Circus. According to Kensington Palace, the service aims to offer “a moment to reflect upon the importance of love and empathy, and how much we need each other, especially in the most difficult times of our lives”. The Palace also stated that the princess intends to “celebrate the many people supporting those in need – individuals who have inspired, counselled, comforted, and above all else shown that love is the greatest gift we can receive”.
