Buckingham Palace has announced that the Princess of Wales will participate in Remembrance events in London this weekend. Her schedule includes the Sunday service at the Cenotaph and the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday evening. The princess has been progressively resuming her public royal duties after her cancer treatment. The Palace also stated that the Queen’s attendance would be contingent on medical advice closer to the date, as she has been ill with a chest infection and withdrew from engagements earlier this week. This engagement signifies a further progression in Catherine’s recovery since her cancer diagnosis. The Prince of Wales previously characterized the past year as the “hardest year” of his life, following cancer diagnoses for both his wife and his father. He informed reporters at the conclusion of his visit to South Africa: “I’m so proud of my wife, I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done. But from a personal family point of view, it’s been brutal.” Buckingham Palace disclosed the King’s cancer diagnosis in February, stating he would commence treatment. Approximately six weeks later, the Princess of Wales’s cancer diagnosis and subsequent chemotherapy treatment were announced. Since these announcements, the King has resumed public duties, and Catherine has completed her chemotherapy treatment. In a video published in September, the princess confirmed she had finished the treatment and was “looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months”. Remembrance events had been identified as potential occasions for her public return. This will be the first time Catherine has performed two consecutive days of public official engagements since the beginning of the year. She had previously made several cautious returns, starting with her initial public appearance after her cancer diagnosis at the annual Trooping the Colour parade in June. In September, she participated in her first official work meeting since her treatment. In October, Catherine visited Southport with the Prince of Wales, where they met the families of three children killed in a knife attack in the town. Her attendance at the Remembrance events, a significant fixture in the royal calendar, is expected to be regarded as another major milestone in her return to public life. Queen Camilla reportedly has not fully recovered from a chest infection, which caused her to miss engagements this week; however, it is understood there is no reason for concern. Earlier this week, the Palace indicated she hoped to be well enough to attend the Remembrance events this weekend. The King, who continues to receive cancer treatment, is scheduled to lead the wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph service on Sunday.
