Prince William, the Prince of Wales, discussed his profound personal ties to Africa in advance of the upcoming Earthshot Prize environmental awards ceremony scheduled for next week in Cape Town, South Africa. Prior to his visit, Prince William stated, “Africa has always held a special place in my heart – as somewhere I found comfort as a teenager, where I proposed to my wife.” His mother, Diana, had numerous connections with the continent, such as backing a charity focused on mine clearance, and his subsequent return as a young man reportedly had a significant emotional effect on him. The prince proposed to Catherine in Kenya during a romantic journey in 2010. He recounted at the time that he had carried the engagement ring, which had previously belonged to his mother, in his rucksack for multiple weeks leading up to the proposal. Prince William indicated his intention to bring his environmental prize back to its African origins, noting that a 2018 visit to Namibia served as the “founding inspiration” and the “birthplace” of the awards. Prince William stated, “It was in Namibia in 2018 that I realised the power of how innovative, positive solutions to environmental problems could drive transformative change for humans and nature.” The Earthshot Prize, which commenced awards in 2021, provides support for sustainable, environmentally friendly initiatives globally, with five recipients each awarded £1 million. This year’s event places a particular emphasis on African ideas, evidenced by over 400 nominated projects led by Africans and an additional 350 projects connected to the continent. Despite Africa contributing the least to global warming emissions, numerous countries within the continent are highly susceptible to the impacts of climate change. The awards prioritize measurable outcomes, aiming to expand successful concepts for greater influence. As an example, a finalist from the previous year featured a project designed to decrease air pollution originating from car tires, which is currently being advanced through a collaboration with Uber in both the UK and the US. Prince William stated, “By the end of the week, I want the Earthshot Prize to have provided a platform to all those innovators bringing about change for their communities, encouraged potential investors to speed African solutions to scale and inspired young people across Africa who are engaged in climate issues.” Consistent with the environmental theme, attendees will walk on a green carpet instead of a red one, and prominent South African landmarks will be lit with green illumination. The prince is scheduled to be present at the awards ceremony on November 6, which will include a performance of a song from The Lion King atop Table Mountain, and the event will be accessible on BBC iPlayer.
