Prince Harry stated that his current life in the United States reflects what his mother, Princess Diana, would have “wanted” for him. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved to Montecito, California, four years prior, following their announcement to withdraw from their roles as senior royals and pursue financial independence. During an interview with Andrew Sorkin at The New York Times Dealbook Summit on Wednesday, the prince was questioned about his intention to reside permanently in America. He responded, “I do,” adding, “I very much enjoy living here and bringing my kids up here.” He further mentioned that his family experiences a level of privacy and freedom in the US that they “undoubtedly wouldn’t be able to do in the UK,” citing security concerns. Harry has initiated legal proceedings regarding alterations to his police protection when he visits the UK. His security arrangements were reduced after he ceased to be a working royal. During the interview, he discussed how living under public scrutiny affected his mental health and that of his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a 1997 car crash in Paris while being pursued by photographers. Harry stated, “I think again, when you are kind of trapped within this bubble, it kind of feels like there’s no way out.” He elaborated, “What happened to my mum and the fact that I was a kid and felt helpless, there comes the inner turmoil. I felt helpless.” He added, “One of my biggest weaknesses is feeling helpless.” He expressed that his primary concern was “that would happen to me, or to my wife, or to my kids.” Currently, Harry indicated his priority is on “being the best husband and the best dad that I can be.” When questioned about the media scrutiny he and his wife encounter, he humorously remarked that they had seemingly relocated and divorced “10-12 times.” He commented, “It’s just like what? It’s hard to keep up with but that’s why you sort of ignore of it.” Concurrently, the Duchess of Sussex attended a fundraising gala held in Beverly Hills, California, on Wednesday evening.
