Calls have been made for the Prime Minister to hold a meeting with a mother who is advocating for the mandatory stocking of bleed kits in nightclubs, following the murder of her son. Cody Fisher, a former Birmingham City FC academy footballer who also played for Bromsgrove Sporting and Stratford Town, was fatally stabbed at a club named Crane on Boxing Day 2022. Following his death in Digbeth, Birmingham, his mother, Tracey, has initiated a campaign advocating for the implementation of bleed kits and metal detectors in various venues. On Wednesday, Manuela Perteghella, the Member of Parliament for Stratford-on-Avon, brought attention to Ms Fisher’s campaign within the House of Commons, characterizing her proposals as “vital”. During Prime Minister’s Questions, the Liberal Democrat MP stated that 26 December would signify the two-year anniversary of Mr Fisher’s death, who was 23 years old. “Cody was a talented footballer with a bright future whose life was tragically cut short when he was stabbed in a nightclub in Birmingham,” she said. “His mother Tracey has been campaigning tirelessly in his memory for legislation that would require venues to have bleed kits and metal detectors. “In light of the government’s commitment to tackling knife crime, will the Prime Minister meet with Tracey and me to discuss these vital proposals to better protect people like Cody from the devastating impact of knife crime?” Sir Keir Starmer commended Ms Fisher for her campaign efforts and noted that the government is implementing initiatives to address knife crime. “I’ve met a number of families on this issue of bleed kits so I know first-hand just how important it is,” he added. Kemi Carpenter, aged 22, and Remy Gordon, aged 23, received life sentences in April following their convictions for the murder of Mr Fisher. Bleed kits, which include bandages, tourniquets, and gloves, are intended to offer immediate aid to individuals experiencing severe bleeding until emergency medical personnel can arrive. These kits were implemented in the West Midlands as a result of a campaign led by Lynne Baird, whose son Daniel passed away in 2017 after being stabbed in Digbeth.
