Guests and staff were required to evacuate the Premier Inn in St Helier at midnight on Thursday after smoke filled one of the corridors and activated a fire alarm. The Jersey Fire and Rescue service was alerted when smoke became visible on the second floor of the Premier Inn Hotel, situated on Bath Street. Upon their arrival, the initial crews prepared to enter, with two firefighters donning breathing apparatus and carrying a medium hose. A room on the second floor was quickly identified as the primary area of concern. However, once access was gained, it was promptly established that there was no active fire within this room, although the smoke was confirmed to have originated from it. The precise cause and origin of the smoke remain under investigation. The force confirmed that due to the potential for this to have developed into a significant incident, the States of Jersey Police and the Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.
