Ben Stokes had last bowled 23 overs in an innings against New Zealand at Trent Bridge in 2022. Seamer Matthew Potts stated that the efforts of captain Ben Stokes served as an inspiration to the England team during the opening day of the third Test against New Zealand. All-rounder Stokes delivered 23 overs in Hamilton, marking his highest number of overs in an innings since the summer of 2022. The captain secured one wicket as New Zealand’s score was restricted from 105-0 to 315-9. Potts conveyed to BBC Sport, “He can be really proud of his efforts.” He added, “He leads the team by example.” Potts further commented, “He probably won’t want to take the credit, but when we see him doing special things like that, it motivates you to put in that extra 1% for the team.” Stokes, aged 33, has experienced a reduction in his bowling activity due to injuries over recent years. Last year, he underwent surgery for a persistent left knee issue, and shortly after regaining full fitness, he suffered a hamstring injury in August. During the three-Test series in New Zealand, where England holds an unassailable 2-0 advantage, Stokes has been able to participate fully as a fourth seamer. The bowling spell he delivered in Hamilton matches the 23 overs he bowled in the first innings of the second Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge over two years prior. Potts, his Durham team-mate, remarked, “Massive plaudits to the skipper.” He added, “He bowled three long spells there and one of them was eight overs of bouncers.” Potts rejoined the England squad, making his initial appearance of the tour as a replacement for Chris Woakes. Potts, aged 26, has intermittently featured in the team since his debut in 2022. This marks his 10th cap and his second of the current winter season. He achieved figures of 3-75, notably dismissing Kane Williamson for 44 when the batsman played the ball onto his own stumps. Potts has now accounted for the dismissal of the Kiwi talisman on four occasions across the five innings he has bowled against him. When questioned about potential frustration regarding the wait for opportunities within the England team, Potts responded: “I wouldn’t say it’s frustrating, no. I enjoy every single moment being part of this squad. There’s always jobs I can be doing, helping out.” He continued, “The competition for places is really high and that’s a great thing from the team stand point. These things happen. You travel around a little bit and don’t play, then you get an opportunity.” England is aiming to become only the third visiting side to achieve a 3-0 clean sweep in this nation. Stokes won the toss and opted to field first, a choice that initially appeared disadvantageous as Tom Latham and Will Young established New Zealand’s highest opening partnership in 18 months. However, England mounted a recovery throughout the afternoon and evening sessions, leaving the match finely balanced. Given a pitch that may exhibit uneven turn and bounce later in the game, England will probably require a substantial first-innings lead. Potts stated, “It’s in the balance.” He added, “The pitch played better throughout the day and started to look like a decent batting wicket.” Potts concluded, “We were excellent. We persevered with the ball and in the field and stuck at it in the heat.”
