Portadown manager Niall Currie characterized his team’s 2-1 comeback triumph against Premiership champions Larne as a “fantastic day for the club.” The champions from the Premiership initially gained the lead through an own goal by Aaron McCarey, but the Portadown side, playing at Shamrock Park, responded with two goals in the second half. Eamon Fyfe scored the equalizer with a header, followed by Shay McCartan securing the winning goal two minutes before full-time with a remarkable strike from his own half. Currie stated, “It’s a fantastic day for the club – in situations like this it is very important to stay in the game.” He elaborated, “We knew possession wise it was always going to be difficult but our shape was fantastic and we were very disciplined.” Currie further added, “We stuck to our gameplan. I thought in the last 25 minutes we opened the game up and had quite a few breakaways.” The match’s pivotal moment occurred in the 88th minute when McCartan, noticing Rohan Ferguson off his line, successfully sent his long-range shot into the net. Commenting on McCartan’s performance, Currie said, “Shay is a wonderful player, a wonderful talent. “People have been saying about his lack of numbers in terms of goals, in terms of assists but is a special player and I’d love to see his GPS stats because he worked his socks off of the ball.” Post navigation St Johnstone Seeks Contract Extension for Benji Kimpioka Celtic Nears Johnston Contract Extension; Brentford Eyes Kuhn; Lagerbielke Frustrated; Scottish Government Considers Banning Order Expansion
