Surrey Police have issued a warning regarding doorstep scammers who are preying on elderly and vulnerable individuals. The police force indicated a rise in doorstep crime incidents, attributing this partly to recent storm activity. They clarified that unscrupulous traders have capitalized on adverse weather conditions to solicit residents unsolicited, proposing to perform frequently unneeded home repairs. These services are then either executed poorly, at an exorbitant price, or not at all. Over the past three months, the force reported receiving 155 complaints from vulnerable individuals across Surrey and Sussex, totaling a recorded financial loss of £980,640. According to Woking Police sergeant Ryan Scott, the typical targets are elderly women residing alone in “well-off” areas. He noted that beyond the monetary expense, this type of crime inflicts a “massive emotional and mental impact” on victims, occasionally leading to a loss of community trust. Mr. Scott further stated, “Unfortunately, we have had some victims pass away, possibly through stress, a couple of weeks after these incidents.” He posited that many such offenses likely go unreported to the police due to victims’ feelings of embarrassment. Surrey Police detailed an instance where an elderly Sussex resident was approached unsolicited at home by rogue traders. The resident consented to a repair for a single loose roof tile. However, the traders asserted that additional work was necessary and attempted to charge 10 times the initial agreed price after merely 30 minutes of further labor. The force reported that despite experiencing pressure and intimidation, the potential victim declined to pay and instead alerted authorities. Mr. Scott encouraged anyone who believes they have fallen victim to doorstep crime to reach out to either the police or trading standards. He emphasized, “It’s so prevalent.” He continued, “The way these people work is they are so convincing. They will confuse you and convince you. There’s no need to feel embarrassed at all.”
